Constantia is the 'green lung' from Cape Town. It lies south of the city center near the backside slopes of the Table Mountain. You'll find an impressingly dense flora with numerous forests. There is a cooler climate and the Table Mountain offers shadow on hot summer days. But be careful, there might be also rain, when the whole Cape area enjoys still the sunshine. In Constantia lies one of the oldest and best known wine-estates of the Cape area. In the year 1652 Jan van Riebeek grew the first vinestocks here. |

Simon van der Stel started to produce at the beginning of the 18th century an excellent red wine. Seven years after his death the farm was divided into 'Groot Constantia', 'Klein Constantia' and 'Buitenverwachting'. 'Groot Constantia' became finally world-famous for the wines as for example 'Constantia Frontignac', 'Pontac' and 'Steen' that were also the favorite wines of Napoleon, Bismarck and King Louis Philippe of France. The Constantia wineroute starts 8 km away from Noordhoek and is worth more than a visit. The vineries adapt wonderfully to the landscape and the Cape-Dutch architecture offers numerous photo motives between the winetastings. |
