Somerset West, named after lord Charles Somerset, lies below the Helderberg Mountain. Due to the central situation at the end of the False Bay the city experienced an economical upswing, entirely lost, however, its charm. One of the most beautiful vineries of the entire Western Cape is situated in Somerset West. It's highly recommended to visit Vergelegen. |

The vinery was set up by the son of the Cape Governor Simon van der Stel and extended with time to a true idyll. The gigantic estate invites to a walk in order to have a look at the gardens (rose garden, cabbage garden) and the Cape-Dutch buildings of the vinery. The 300 years old camphor trees which frame the main house became declared as a national memorial. After previous reservation you can eat in the 'Lady Phillips tea garden', a small restaurant, or you enjoy one of the delicious picnic baskets in the garden. |
